Kay has had a passion for sports since childhood, through adulthood and now, in “seniorhood.”
Some of her fondest sports memories include playing basketball throughout school; being offered a college basketball scholarship; playing on an AAU state championship adult basketball team; and attaining a state ranking in women‘s tennis doubles (3rd in state - Texas State Tennis Association).
Kay has coached and played on several senior women's basketball teams, including local and state teams, the 2007 and 2009 Senior Games, and the 2007 Huntsman World Senior Games.
As a player, Kay has won a number of gold medals at the local, state and national levels in 3-on-3 team events and individual competitions (including free throw, 3 point shooting, around the world, and hot shot).
Kay is founder and president of Basketball and Fitness for Senior Women in the Dallas area where she plays on the 65+ Texas All Stars team, and serves as head coach.
In addition to a very active competitive playing schedule, Kay places a great deal of importance on the promotion of senior women’s basketball through their “Granny Globetrotter” halftime show - featuring ball handling demonstrations and 3-on-3 exhibition play at WNBA, NBA, colleges, universities, and special events.
Additionally, through this program, senior women’s basketball has become better known through all types of print media and human interest stories on aging, and through numerous national television features, including a special promotion with the Harlem Globetrotters ... “The Harlem Globetrotters meet the Granny Globetrotters”.
At the same time Kay was promoting senior women’s basketball in Texas, Helen White, President of NOVA United Senior Women's Basketball Association in Virginia, was doing the same with their program. Kay and Helen often talked and exchanged ideas on different ways to promote senior women’s basketball both on a local and national level.
Through the years, a considerable amount of information was exchanged between Kay, Helen, and other women involved in senior women‘s basketball. After taking the first steps to start a national program, both Kay and Helen decided to put that idea on hold to focus on building their local programs.
As a long-time advocate of encouraging and empowering women to live their dreams and passions, Kay is writing a book, “Get up … Get out … and Get your move on ... living life after 50 with passion, purpose and courage.” Passion, Purpose and Courage are Kay‘s three main talking points as a motivational speaker.
