August 25, 2010 - Another Gold Rush Out West!

Women from all parts of the country are heading west to fight for their share.

It’s going to be a tough two days as these women pass, block, drive and shoot their way to the gold.  Luckily, it’s only on the basketball courts this September 18th & 19th at Balboa Park, in San Diego, California, where the San Diego Senior Games will be hosting a month long multi-sport event.

The competition will be fierce and exhausting as they will play up to five games in two days and loving every minute.  Teams from southern California will compete, including the NSWBA LA Cougars who will be participating in the tournament for the first time. Veteran teams from New Mexico and other states are also expected to attend. The stars, however, are the “Splash,” whose players are over 80 years of age and won several gold medals.  They are from the SWBA league here in San Diego.

San Diego Senior Games Association has added two new age brackets for the basketball tournament.  In the past, there were seven age brackets in five year age increments and now there will be nine.  “The momentum and growth of women’s basketball has increased immensely and women in their forties want to play in these games too, not all of them want to play against 18 year olds,” said Kirsten Cummings, California State Senior Women’s Basketball Commissioner.  “This indicates the strong desire, passion and enthusiasm women have for the sport, and I’m thrilled to see it now growing so rapidly.”

Much of this growth is due to the efforts of the San Diego Senior Games Association, California Senior Games Association, National Senior Games Association and the National Senior Women’s Basketball Association. Thanks to all of these organizations this is just the beginning and it looks like there will be much more opportunity for women to play across America.
