May 5, 2010 - San Diego’s SWBA women’s basketball league pleased and surprised the crowd during halftime when the LA Sparks played China’s National basketball team at Viejas Arena.
The fans cheered wildly as the LA Sparks and China’s National team left the court at halftime. Not for the pro teams, but for the San Diego local Senior Women’s Basketball Association (SWBA), a league of local, active and athletic women ages 50 – 80+ made their way onto the court to play a 3 on 3 exhibition game at Viejas Arena.
As they ran their pregame warm-up drills on both ends of the court several shots were taken without a miss! The fans clapped, hooted and hollered for these energetic and inspiring women.
This crowd pleasing exhibition game was co-created by the NSWBA (National Senior Women’s Basketball Association) and the WNBA’s L.A. Sparks. Their common goals are not only to co-promote their respective organizations, and generate more interest in watching the pros, but to get the boomers and others out there playing during mid-life and beyond. More importantly these organizations strive to promote a healthy lifestyle, wellness, physical fitness and the benefits of being part of an active community.
These ladies compete and have fun at least two times a week at the Mission Valley YMCA, Thursday nights and Sunday afternoons.
The NSWBA is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to improve the lives and health of senior women through the creation of senior women’s basketball leagues across the nation. The San Diego Senior Women’s Basketball Association is their inspiration and model for leagues they develop in the future. A new league has already been formed in the Los Angeles area.
